Sustainability Workshops

Introduction to Sustainability and Change

What is ecological sustainability? What are we doing well? What does it mean for us? How do we change? A two hour thought provoking, deep thinking, participatory session that will either kick start your journey into the new economy, or provide the perfect chance to evaluate progress.

Ecological Sustainability Leaders

An executive level session on understanding the sustainability led economy, our customers, our environmental impacts and the business possibilities of change. Where is our organisation going? How will we remain relevant and effective in the new economy? What is this ecological sustainability thing anyway? Why haven't we thought about it before? What are we doing well? What's next? Setting goals, understanding how to set up a green team and monitor progress for change.

We asked Ian to help us to facilitate a workshop to develop a compelling case for action and a shared vision for sustainability for our organisation. I can’t recommend Ian highly enough after this experience. Not only did he deliver a terrific result, he was able to turn it around in a very short timeframe while being an utter pleasure to work with. Ian stands out from other facilitators in a number of critical ways. Perhaps most importantly, he makes the whole experience fun and engaging. He is able to communicate with and engage people regardless of background. He is an expert at inspiring and educating on ecological sustainability, and his 10,000+ hours of experience in this really shone through in our session. He uses terrific activities that ensure even reluctant participants get involved and engaging with the material – for example, his new Talking ecoLogical card set. As he says, culture begins with conversations. If you’re looking to motivate, inspire, or educate on ecological sustainability then Ian McBurney should be at the top of your shortlist.
— Miriam Powell, Environmental Leadership Coordinator, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, 2014
Ian’s “Kitchen Table Conversations” workshop was absolutely fantastic. It took us all on an empowering journey about what it means to be a leader in sustainability and how to bring about positive change. As well as being fun and energising, the workshop also gave us some useful tools when it comes to having effective conversations about our future.
— Lisa Rankin, Sustainability Officer, Warrnambool City Council, 2014
Thanks again for facilitating our Sustainability Leaders workshop – you were awesome, as always! Thanks for the motivation, inspiration, energy, words of wisdom, being so thought provoking and keeping the folks interested and involved the whole way through. You really impressed Chris, our CEO, too.
— Jen McQueeney, Environmental Engagement Officer, City of Hobsons Bay, 2013
This was one of the best teaching and/or learning sessions I have experienced in a long time.
— Banyule Sustainability Leadership Workshop participant, 2014
Ian delivered a fun, engaging and hands on workshop to encourage the students to think about leadership, goal setting and creating positive change.
— Rory White, City of Greater Bendigo | Youth Participation Officer
I would like to thank you again for last Monday’s workshop. I really feel that you engaged beautifully with the group. The session was unrushed although we covered a large volume of information. It allowed for personal reflection & for listening to others. It was a dynamic mix of stories, quotes, visuals, interactions & fun! The content, knowledge and delivery was excellent and I believe made so by your genuine passion for spreading the sustainability message.
Cheers to you!
— Emma Douglas, Preschool Field Officer, Site Manager, Noah's Ark Inc, October 2011
I can confidently say that Ian is one of the most knowledgeable and capable leaders, facilitators and educators of community- school- and business- education for sustainability that I have known.
— Dr Colin Hocking l Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Sustainability and Innovation and Convenor of Iramoo Sustainable Community Centre, Victoria University
Ian’s passion and enthusiasm for the environment was most evident when he presented at our eight different events where we utilised his skills as both Master of Ceremonies and workshop presenter. Both students, teachers and government agency staff found Ian’s unique ability to engage them in environmental issues exciting and inspiring.
— Donna Wardlaw, Regional Education Officer, Central Murray Regional Waste Management Group, 2007
We would like to give a massive thankyou to Ian McBurney from Vox Bandicoot who has been flying up from Melbourne with a suitcase full of inspiration, wisdom and cheap jokes.
— Blacktown City Council Environment Team, 2006
We found Ian to be professional, engaging and respectful. He establishes an instand rapport with people, has an excellent knowledge of sustainability and is equally at home delivering training theatre style to the shop floor and in a suit to our engineers, finance and administration staff.
— Fiona Gauci, Chemical and Environment Manager, Robert Bosch (Australia) Pty Ltd
