Facilitation on time, on message, participatory, thought provoking and heaps of fun

Ian's facilitation skills come from an environmental education, theatre and training background.

When Ian facilitates it will be on time, on message, participatory, heaps of fun and will achieve lasting outcomes.

Your relaxed style and witty humour as MC were fantastic and the feedback from the attendees was unanimously brilliant. Your ability to read the audience and build the energy in the room is outstanding

Ian McBurney’s vibrant facilitation of the Victorian Adaptation & Sustainability Partnership symposium in Bendigo fostered a day of lively enthusiastic discussion with great outcomes.
Ian’s flexible style meant that group conversations could continue when needed, be guided when required, and the organic flow of the symposium enabled a safe, relaxed environment for open discussion. The group of council sustainability officers were so impressed with the symposium, they requested that the gatherings continue on an on-going basis - a terrific outcome.

The enthusiasm that Ian brought, and his appropriateness in being environmentally minded, was perfect. It also meant that the organising committee could tend to other issues if they came up, in an efficient manner.”

“Even though I think you should never trust a person in a fedora, Ian was great. He was in tune to things happening even when others were presenting. His engagement with others over dinner and during break was also exceedingly personable and valuable.”

We asked Ian to help us to facilitate a workshop to develop a compelling case for action and a shared vision for sustainability for our organisation. I can’t recommend Ian highly enough after this experience. Not only did he deliver a terrific result, he was able to turn it around in a very short timeframe while being an utter pleasure to work with. Ian stands out from other facilitators in a number of critical ways. Perhaps most importantly, he makes the whole experience fun and engaging. He is able to communicate with and engage people regardless of background. He is an expert at inspiring and educating on ecological sustainability, and his 10,000+ hours of experience in this really shone through in our session. He uses terrific activities that ensure even reluctant participants get involved and engaging with the material – for example, his new Talking ecoLogical card set. As he says, culture begins with conversations. If you’re looking to motivate, inspire, or educate on ecological sustainability then Ian McBurney should be at the top of your shortlist.

The DELWP Young Professionals Network wishes to acknowledge your wonderful contribution as MC, presenter and entertainer at our annual YPN forum. Your relaxed style and witty humour as MC were fantastic and the feedback from the attendees was unanimously brilliant. Your ability to read the audience and build the energy in the room is outstanding and to see the whole room doing a choreographed dance to Blue Danube with balloons was exceptional to say the least.”

‘Ian’s participation was incredibly valuable, especially to focus the forum and to run sessions. I think he had a really good mixture of leading professionally, while helping people to relax and make the most of each of the sessions’

I nearly didn’t come because I didn’t think I had any skills to share, but because we had such a good facilitator, I realised I do have skills to share.
